Czech Pairs Take Both Brno Titles
Ondřej Perušič and Jakub Šépka won a men's final whose second set finished 37-35, Kylie Neuschaeferová and Martina Maixnerová won the women's, and Czech pairs took five of the six medals.
Czech pairs won both titles at the Beach Pro Tour Futures event in Brno on Sunday and took five of the six medals available on their own sand.
Ondřej Perušič and Jakub Šépka beat Matyáš Džavoronok and Jiří Sedlák 2-0 in the men's final, and the two sets went 21-14 and then 37-35.
Perušič and Šépka were seeded first and Džavoronok and Sedlák second, so the men's final was the seeding holding, and the first set said so early.
A set played to 21 finished at 37-35. The two pairs scored 72 points in it, and the match still took only two sets.
Kylie Neuschaeferová and Martina Maixnerová beat Markéta Svozilová and Marie-Sára Štochlová in the women's final, and Andrea Lorenzová and Mariana Tomasová took the bronze.
Neuschaeferová and Maixnerová were seeded second and Svozilová and Štochlová first, so the women's final was the seeding turning over, and it took three sets to do it.
The women's set scores are in dispute. Volleyball World has the final at 24-22, 22-24, 15-11 and the Czech news agency ČTK has it at 22-20, 22-23, 15-13.
A beach set is won by two points, so 22-23 cannot be a finished set. We are printing Volleyball World's numbers and saying plainly that a second published account disagrees with them.
Both finals were all-Czech and so was one side of the women's bronze match. The only medallists from anywhere else were Latvia's Olivers Bulgačs and Mārcis Bērziņš, who won the men's bronze over an Italian pair.
Futures is the entry tier of the Beach Pro Tour and a home draw is heavy with home pairs. Five of six is still five of six.
