Skinner Seals the Repeat: Finals MVP, Again 🏆
Austin beat Salt Lake by a golden set in Long Beach to repeat, and Madisen Skinner took a second straight Finals MVP.
Salt Lake won the first match of the League One Volleyball final in five sets. Austin won the second in five. Neither had separated from the other after ten sets of volleyball in Long Beach.
So the 2026 season was decided by a golden set, a single race to fifteen played after the second match, and Austin won it 15-8 to repeat as champion of League One Volleyball.
Madisen Skinner was named Finals most valuable player for the second year running. She has now won that award in every season Austin has finished as champion.
A golden set is the shortest way a season can end and the least forgiving. Ten sets had produced nothing, and then fifteen points produced a champion, a runner-up and two awards.
Alexa Gray Had the Best Match of the Night
Gray finished the final with 24 kills for Salt Lake and finished it on the wrong side of a golden set.
Nothing in the format gives a losing team credit for the sets it won. Salt Lake took the first match of the series and Austin took the second, and both went the distance.
That is the argument against the golden set and it is also the argument for it. Two matches had already failed to produce a champion, and somebody had to be handed a trophy in Long Beach that night.
Austin has now won two titles in two years and Skinner has won two Finals awards in two years. The record is real and the sample is two.
